After the invasion of Kuwait, fearing that the Iraqi army could launch an invasion in Saudi Arabia, President George H. W. Bush announced that the United States would have embarked on a mission "wholly defensive" called Operation Desert Shield to prevent a possible attack and occupation of Saudi oil fields.
